Important points to remember while Negotiating Salary

Hi All,

We have already discussed about "Salary Negotiation Skills",but in this article we shall discuss about the things that we should keep in mind while negotiating.

Though there are no definite statements about what you should do and what you should not do while negotiating, but there are certain things which are the common "NO" in the negotiation process.

- Do not start negotiating too soon:

Timing is a very important factor here.Negotiation should begin only after getting a formal offer. If the offer satisfies you in every aspect, accept it.Do not start negotiating jsut because you have to.However there is nothing wrong to ask for some time to think upon the offer or to ask if the offer is negotiable.

- Negotiating Salary:

It is generally the salary that job seekers negotiate on.But,salary is not the only aspect of the offer package. You have to see if the company offers other benefits also like a health insurance coverage, vacation time, relocation expenses, incentives, bonuses etc. Therefore,if you find that you are getting a lot of other benefits apart from the salary, then take up the offer as the other benefits are a real dollar value.

- Misconception about the system:

Many job seekers are of the opinion that the employers will, without any exception, under rate the employee by offering them a package that will be below their standards and qualification. While there are certain employers who do so,but please do not start a negotiation with such a mentality. If you do so,the negotiation will only lead to an ugly argument.

- Do not assume that your degree will get you a Higher Starting Salary:

Advanced eduacation is nothing but a requirement for the employers to narrow down their pool of applicants to a comparatively manageable size.If you do not have a work experience, then your degree alone cannot help you get a higher starting salary.Dont think that you only have your degree to offer to the employer.Significant work experience adds more weightage than the degree alone. While your degree can only suggest your job-performance potential, your previous work experience indicates your past job performance and achievements.

- Do not believe that every Negotiation will end in your favour:

Remember that every negotiation is not a win-win situation. Its basically a compromise where both the employer and the job seeker come to a point where there is a mutual agreement. However, this does not mean that you have to accept any offer that comes your way.Do not accept an offer that does not satisfy your basic needs. If you feel that the offer is not good enough, continue your job search for a better offer.

Therefore, before you begin Negotiating with the employer,do keep the above points in mind.Do not convert a negotiation into a debate.Keep a cool mind if the negotiation does not go in your favour. If you are well-qualified and skilled, you will definitely get a job offer that you deserve.

Kavita
