Emotional Intelligence consists of 5 factors-
1)Self-awareness- Having a deep understanding of ones own emotions, strengths, weaknesses, needs and drives that enables them to be honest with themselves and others as well because of which they would neither be too critical not unrealistically hopeful.
2)Self-Regulation- Ability to control or redirect ones impulses and moods, have the tendency to think before acting which makes ambiguity acceptable besides being open to change.
3)Motivation- A passion to work for reason beyond money.status,a natural inclination to pursue goals with energy and persistance.
4)Empathy- Ability to understand the emotional make-up of other people,to react to people according to their emotional plane.
5)Social Skill- Proficiency in managing relationships and building networks by identifying the common ground for building such rapport.
Among the 5 components the first two are the most essential factors of Emotional Intelligence.
A) Self-awareness- The first among the components of Emotional Intelligence enables a leader to understand how his feelings affect him, people around him and his performance at the given job.It also helps leadrs to understand their values and goals clearly. Its awareness reflects in his ability to access oneself realistically. While being highly confident of themselves, self aware leaders are often found narrating their failures with a smile.A self-aware leader is aware of his emotional tendencies.Leaders who are not self-aquainted and who dont know how their emotional status affects their self and others are prone to create a more anxiety-provoking emotional context for everyone involved.
B)The next component of Emotional Intelligence is "Self-Regulation".We know our biological impulses drive our emotions. We cant avoid them, but can certainly manage them to a great extent provided we know what is driving us towards what.Self-regulation enables leaders to act free of these forces.Leaders who have control over their feelings can only create an element of trust and fairness-where politics automatically diminishes and the rest of the employees feel comfortable to give their best to the organization.
In a competitive business environment only leaders who master their emotions can adapt to changes imposed by changing consumer demands, change in technology etc.It minimizes if not eliminates impulsive behaviour in organizations and thereby enhances the integrity of the leaders and organization as well, which in turn eliminates the scope for unethical practices.
Therefore, the mere presence of IQ and technical ability is not enough to become a leader.A leader is complete only when he is equipped with Emotional Intelligence because that alone helps in good behaviour.
Sustainable leadership cannot emerge in isolation by a single leader,it must hence be a collective and collaborative effort of a leadership team.It is not the responsibility of a single leader to answer all the questions that an organization faces, but the leader has to make the followers take ownership of the problem and find solutions by themselves. Thus, the success of todays leaders is as much dependant upon others actions as any of his personal qualities.
To keep the team going in good stead a leader has to constantly be able to sense and understand the perspective of every member and generate a common opinion in a group.
Thus to perform well in todays competitive market, business leaders need to have Emotional Intelligence.
